Report reveals challenges to building community at mixed-income developments

Social dynamics at three Chicago mixed-income developments are complicated and can be difficult, according to recent study findings announced by University of Chicago.

Authors Robert Chaskin of University of Chicago and Mark Joseph of Case Western Reserve University are engaged in a multi-year study focused on three mixed-income developments constructed as part of the city's Plan for Transformation of public housing. Their latest findings are presented in the current issue of Urban Affairs Review in the article, "Building ‘Community' in Mixed-Income Developments: Assumptions, Approaches and Early Experiences."

While the mixed-income developments are generating positive outcomes on many fronts, in some cases resident relations pose a challenge for planners and policymakers.
