National policy forum to highlight Chicago’s efforts to serve struggling public-housing residents

*UPDATE: Due to winter storms in the Washington D.C. area, this event has been rescheduled from February 11 to March 11.*

An expert panel will assemble in Washington D.C. next week to discuss "The Next Challenge for Public Housing: Serving Its Most Vulnerable Families."

Part of the "Thursday's Child" series of public policy forums held regularly by co-sponsors the Urban Institute and Chapin Hall at University of Chicago, the panel discussion will highlight work being done in Chicago to serve the most troubled families in the wake of public-housing overhauls.

Panelists will include representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Chicago Housing Authority, Urban Institute, Chapin Hall and Heartland Human Care Services. Heartland is a grantee of The Partnership for New Communities and recently completed a pilot program combining transitional jobs and contextualized literacy for public-housing residents who read below fifth-grade level.
