Our Initiatives

The Partnership invests in workforce development, economic development and community building to revitalize the neighborhoods most affected by public-housing transformation.

    Association House of Chicago

    Workforce Development | Funded 2010 | $200,000

    This grant supports Association House of Chicago's provision of contextualized literacy skills training and transitional jobs programming to improve reading, writing, math and computer skills of 68 public-housing residents, while also providing them with real work experience, specific job training and placement assistance. The programs are part of Opportunity Chicago's Intensive Employment Services strategy. The grant also supports "Sitter Service," onsite childcare for program participants; 20 parents also will be involved in parenting classes through Sitter Service.

    Heartland Human Care Services

    Workforce Development | Funded 2010 | $225,000

    This grant supports Heartland Human Care Services’ transitional jobs program to provide public-housing residents with training and work experience in the energy efficiency field. 35 public-housing residents will complete a 12-week program that includes subsidized employment in the energy efficiency field and up to 12 hours per week of paid literacy class participation. Participants also will receive information on green job and training opportunities.

    Chicago Jobs Council (CJC)

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $12,000

    As part of a grant from national funder collaborative Living Cities, Chicago Jobs Council will coordinate and communicate activities of the Workforce Partnership for Energy Efficiency, a new model training program being developed to prepare Chicago Housing Authority residents and other low-skilled workers for employment in the growing field of residential weatherization.

    Center for Urban Economic Development (CUED)

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $300,000

    This grant supports CUED, in collaboration with Abt Associates, in their continuing evaluation of the impact, effectiveness, process and progress of the five-year Opportunity Chicago workforce development initiative supporting the CHA’s Plan for Transformation and the documentation of the model for use by local and national public workforce systems.

    Association House of Chicago

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $300,000

    Association House will pilot a modular program that combines elements of literacy, vocational skills training, and transitional jobs program designs. Fifty-four individuals will participate in the Vocational Bridge Academy and 35 will have paid work experience through a partnership with the Salvation Army.

    Chicago Community Loan Fund (CCLF)

    Neighborhood Development | Funded 2009 | $5,000

    CCLF concluded its market demand analysis for the State Street corridor and the development of a loan-based strategy to simulate commercial and retail investment.

    Instituto del Progreso Latino

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $220,000

    This grant provided Instituto with continued support to develop and pilot a manufacturing-contextualized literacy skills training program to connect public-housing residents to employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry.

    Brandeis University

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $5,000

    This grant supports the inclusion of the Youth Ready Chicago summer jobs program in Brandeis University`s U.S. Department of Labor-funded national documentation study. The study is evaluating the effectiveness of youth summer jobs programs from around the country that were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

    Rogers Park Community Development Corporation (RPCDC)

    Special Initiatives | Funded 2009 | $15,000

    RPCDC will provide an additional nine months of counseling on available purchase incentives to mixed-income development sales teams, homeownership counseling to first-time homebuyers, and will administer the remainder of The Partnership’s $10,000 purchase incentives for units in participating mixed-income developments part of the Find Your Place in Chicago program.

    Rogers Park Community Development Corporation (RPCDC)

    Special Initiatives | Funded 2009 | $66,000

    RPCDC provides counseling on available purchase incentives to mixed-income development sales teams for the Find Your Place in Chicago program and delivers homeownership counseling to first-time homebuyers.

    Capacity Developers, Inc.

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $150,000

    Capacity Developers, the nonprofit partner of Educational Data Systems, Inc., the operator of ServiceWorks, will develop training and hiring infrastructure to help Chicago Housing Authority residents secure jobs in the service industry.

  • Central-states-ser_2009 Central-states-ser_2009

    Central States SER

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $300,000

    Central States SER continues its Healthcare Careers Bridge and contextualized literacy program, extending training opportunities to 66 CHA residents and training 50 new residents, resulting in 40 full-time employment placements.

    Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Foundation

    Workforce Development | Funded 2009 | $100,000

    CCCF continues its partnership with TEC Services, Inc. and CHA Resident Services division to develop workforce partnerships in the information technology (IT) sector. The work will focus on 1) employer engagement efforts leading to the development of formal workforce partnerships in the information technology sector, and 2) technology training services for CHA residents.

    Taproot Foundation

    Neighborhood Development | Funded 2009 | $42,000

    Taproot Foundation administered seven additional service grants offering professional, pro bono consulting services to organizations providing workforce development programs to residents in The Partnership’s neighborhoods of focus.
